Analysis Shows Shrinking Average Height of Americans and Height Disparities in Different Professions

Jakarta

The average height of Americans has been shrinking for generations. The results of the analysis also show that there is a gap in height between various professions.

In an analysis by The Washington Post, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health Interview Survey shows public officials are the highest category of population with women averaging 178 cm for men and 166 cm for women.

Athletes, entertainers and managers also rank high on the list of tallest citizens for both genders.

Meanwhile, jobs such as janitors, farm laborers, machine operators and individuals working in the food service sector are among the jobs with the shortest heights.

Differences in height, according to previous research, can be caused by bias; society is more likely to hire taller candidates for leadership positions, such as public officials, because it is seen as an indicator of health and authority.

The shortest men are agricultural workers and the shortest women work as janitors.

National height has been changing for years, and according to CDC data, major shrinkage in Americans has been occurring for more than two decades.

But when comparing the heights of modern people in 200 countries with heights 30 years earlier, data from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration shows that Americans are slowly getting shorter overall.

In 1985, 19-year-old American males ranked 36th highest in the world, while females were 38th. In 2019, they dropped to 47th and 58th respectively.

Factors such as genetics, nutrition, and access to health care play a role in determining height. The height of white Americans began to decline around 1980, coinciding with an increase in childhood obesity.

“Excess fat tissue increases estrogen levels, which, in turn, causes bones to mature more and growth plates to fuse earlier,” explains author and pediatric endocrinologist Louise Greenspan, of Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center.
