(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Doyeon Lee = As the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas continues, it was found that about a third of the buildings in the northern area of the Gaza Strip were damaged or destroyed by Israeli airstrikes.

On the 7th (local time), the American daily New York Times (NYT) reported that, as a result of analyzing satellite photos of the Gaza Strip, thousands of buildings in the northern part of the Gaza Strip were damaged last week alone.

Israel has continued airstrikes on the northern part of the Gaza Strip over the past 10 days while advancing ground forces toward Gaza City.

The previous day, the Israeli military announced that it had bombed about 450 targets in 24 hours, and on this day, it officially announced the start of urban warfare.

“Gaza City is surrounded,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised speech this afternoon, adding, “Our military is operating within it, and we are intensifying the pressure on Hamas every hour of every day.”

According to an analysis by Jaymon Vandenhoek, an associate professor at Oregon State University, and Corey Shea, a doctoral student at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, 38,000 buildings, or 13 to 18% of all buildings in the Gaza Strip, including the southern part of the Gaza Strip, were built from the 7th to the 29th of last month. ~44,000 buildings are estimated to have been damaged.

Israel continues airstrikes in the south, but this analysis shows that damage is less concentrated than in the north.

In the northern part of the Gaza Strip, where Gaza City is located, 29.7% to 33.5% of all buildings were destroyed, but in the southern part of Khan Yunis, 6.4 to 8.0% of all buildings were destroyed.

The Israeli military has continued to urge Gaza civilians to move south since the war began with a surprise attack by Hamas on the 7th of last month, and recently temporarily allowed passage on major highways to allow residents to evacuate to the south.

The United Nations understands that when the Israeli military ordered people to evacuate through a highway for four hours on the 4th and 5th, 2,000 and 5,000 people fled, respectively.

But tens of thousands of civilians remain in the north, mainly sheltering in hospitals or UN facilities.

They believe that the evacuation route is too dangerous or that the southern part of the country is no longer safe, so they are unable to take the evacuation route.
