In a nervousness that was greater than we expected. I felt from my players that they had unnecessary respect for the opponent and the competition. In the first half we played well defensively and did quite well to stop the opponents in front of the goal, although sometimes with all our might and at the last moment. When we got the ball, we were inaccurate and within one or two plays we lost the ball. Despite all that, we kept an acceptable position and had a great chance that needs to be converted.
And the penalty came, Albert Grönbaek sent Bodö into the lead.
This shouldn’t have happened. If we could finish 0-0 at the break, it would have a better effect on the second half. We improved in it, we hit the crossbar and had two more chances that were converted. On the other hand, the home team also had chances, which was due to the fact that the game broke up. I regret the third conceded goal, which probably indicated a lot in terms of progress. A 0:2 result would still give us hope for the rematch, but 0:3 will be very difficult to turn around.
How much of an effect did the artificial turf have on the outcome?
I don’t want to make excuses for him, I’ll just state the facts. For example, the rebound is different: the ball flies around your leg and it is very difficult to react to it. You don’t meet such an artist very often, she is very soft and different from here. Unfortunately, we have another injured: Matoušek sprained his ankle, Hála has problems and we lost Jánoš in pre-match training. The home team uses their artist to the maximum and the opponents have problems with her. It didn’t lose us the match, but it could have affected accuracy.
Maybe that’s also why we weren’t able to get into the press box or dueling things: there were a few balls behind our defense that the home team finished on the wings. But if you want to succeed, you have to convert the solo raid, which we failed to do. If we had scored to make it 1-0 or 2-1, we would have scored an acceptable result. It is a tax and a big school. There is no shame in losing to such an opponent, but I expected us to resist more in some passages. I have to congratulate the home team: they have excellent players, a good game structure and an organization that is well built. They clearly showed it against us.
Was it a big school for you as a coach? You had to improvise a lot.
It was like a ship sinking. We were plugging holes on one side and they appeared on the other. We had huge problems on the opponent’s right side, where Bodö outplayed us. We wanted to prevent it, and then the mentioned health problems were added to it. We had the substitutions ready with the belief that the first bunch would play an acceptable result and then the players would come in to liven it up. From an offensive point of view it was successful, from a defensive point of view not so much.
Despite the heavy defeat, your fans chanted “Kangaroos, it was worth it!” Was it worth it?
Jim probably does. I can’t bet on something, it was reality. It’s no coincidence that Bodö wins steamboat titles. All his games look like this, and it is no coincidence that he has a nine-point lead in the league. However, I regret that when we did manage to survive, we conceded at the end of both halves.
Did anything else disappoint you?
You also have to score a goal when the opponent offers you chances. If it had ended 1:2 or 1:3, it would still have been playable, but this is how we solved it with our own stupidity. The situation before the third goal was solvable: we opened up the middle of the pitch and got to an unnecessary frenzy. We should have finished it more tactically and left the double game open for a rematch as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t do that.
