In October 2019, the singer and actress Anahí de Cárdenas felt a lump in her breast while performing a self-examination. In March 2020, Peruvians went into a mandatory quarantine that lasted longer than pessimists would have imagined.
In the midst of all that, she was on chemotherapy to beat breast cancer, which she ultimately defeated, while we all lived with the panic of the coronavirus. The testimony of this complex and difficult process is his book ‘Fuck Cancer’ (Grijalbo).
“Every day I appreciate life more and I try to live my days in gratitude and that is something that I did not do before. Before I lived thinking about everything I did not have and now I live thanking for what I have, “admits the actress, as a teaching.
Was this book difficult to write?
Actually there was not much difficulty. It is a book that I did not begin to write as a book itself, but as passages or as a diary that was helping me process what was happening to me. Then later, in a meeting with Penguin Random House, I decide to turn these passages into a book.
Did it cost you to be convinced?
Not at all! On the contrary, it was something that wanted to get out of me and, the truth is, it has helped me a lot to cope with all this experience and, I think, it also serves to be able to accompany other women who are going through this situation.
Let’s talk about fear …
In fact, many times in the book I say that I am afraid, I say it repeatedly. I think that assuming emotions and situations and giving them a space in our being, makes us overcome them in a way, I don’t know if faster or better. I feel that if we hide from what we feel and do not go through it in its fullness, we will not overcome it. This is something that I have been practicing for a long time.
The treatment you received coincided somewhat with the onset of the pandemic …
The situation did not help at all! I still think that one is never prepared for such a diagnosis, but it is true that the situation made everything a little more complicated. Thank goodness I had the opportunity to carry out my treatment in a pseudo-normal way.
Understanding that there is no normality in battling cancer …
It was like being in a movie, really, an apocalyptic thing walking down the street going to the clinic with some gigantic masks, covering me and, with all the protocols, going to the chemotherapy room at a time when you felt that by being close to anyone could die.
Did you detect cancer in time?
Every year I do cancer checkups and I also did self-exams. In fact, that’s how I discovered cancer, in a self-exam. There is a history of cancer in my family but not of breast cancer. At that time, I was very aware of it because three people I knew had breast cancer and, thanks to these diagnoses, I am doing a self-exam.
This level of awareness must be fostered.
It is not a matter of conscience, it is a matter of information. You have to know that if you check yourself, if you know your body, you can prevent diseases and treat them in time, and prevention saves lives.
