Guadalajara. Even though she had everything in her favor, especially the support of the Mexican public, Ana Sofía Sánchez did not manage to advance in the Guadalajara Open and was eliminated 6-0 3-6 6-2 in the first round of the tournament by the Italian Lucrezia Stefanini, who came from the qualifier.
The first set was a nightmare for the 30-year-old tennis player from Potosí, as she was unable to score a single game against her opponent.
In the second set, Ana Sofia was 2-3 down on the scoreboard and had a break point against her. It was then that the rain forced the match to be stopped at the Grandstand of the Pan American Tennis Center.
The break of more than an hour favoured the return to the court of the Mexican player, number 285 in the WTA rankings. Ana Sofia played with greater ease and came back to 6-3.
Fans cheered “Sofi” on throughout the third set in the hope of seeing a comeback from the player. However, Sanchez failed to achieve the miracle and was eliminated from the tournament.
Marie Bouzkova, the second round
Marie Bouzkova, number 45 in the WTA rankings, had a successful start in Guadalajara. The Czech had no problems in defeating Alexandra Eala, a young rival who at times showed her lack of experience on the professional tour.
The sixth seed, who knows the court perfectly, where she has been a finalist and semi-finalist on more than one occasion, beat the 2022 US Open junior champion 6-2, 6-2.
