Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes believes he was sent off undeservedly against Tottenham. His team easily lost 0:3 in the game in the 6th round of the Premier League on the home turf on Sunday.
The Portuguese was sent off by the referee at the end of the first half when he appeared to slip while trying to disarm James Maddison, before lifting his right foot to shin the man -beat challenges.
Referee Chris Kavanagh thought he deserved a straight red card and VAR supported his decision. The official explanation from the Premier League was that Fernandes was booked for a “serious offence”.
However, the player himself claims that it was not a red card at all and said that even Maddison, who was the victim of his philandering, told him that the tackle did not deserve such a punishment.
“That can’t be a red card. I agree it was a rule violation, but it didn’t deserve a ban. The referee tried to tell me that he saw that there was a direct contact with the pegs on my shoes. It was not like that. I did not touch it with my fingers or my foot. It was my finger.
If he showed me a yellow card because they are counter-attacking, I would agree. But nothing more. Even James, standing up, said it wasn’t a red card. If it is a red card, we have many other events to watch. I don’t understand why VAR didn’t call the referee to the monitor,” midfielder Fernandes said after the match.
Normally in the Premier League, players and coaches who receive red cards do not give interviews after matches. However, Fernandes emphasized that he himself decided to speak about the situation: “I just wanted to come and talk, be myself. My teammates deserve it because they had to play one less. Especially since I was the one who got kicked out and let them down. The team showed character, resilience and fought hard. The players tried, but it wasn’t easy.”
Manchester United footballers have not beaten Tottenham since October 2022. They are in 12th place in the table, their opponent on Sunday is in eighth place.
