An Unusual Lunar Eclipse Will Happen

Monday, 30 January 2023 – 12:01 WIB

LIVE Techno – This Monday night there will be eclipse that is unusual Lunar Eclipse of Mars. At the time of the event, the neighboring planet Earth it will disappear from view behind Moon during an event known as an occultation of the Moon. This will happen at 20:30 PST or Tuesday, 11:30 WIB.

The central and northern United States and southern Canada will be presented with a view of the enlarged gibbous moon, under the Red planet. As much as 78 percent of the Moon will cover Mars. But a few hours later, the planet will reappear on the other side of the Moon.

Meanwhile parts of California, the Southern Rockies and the Southwestern Desert and most of Texas and Oklahoma, the Deep South including South Georgia and Florida will have a miss when the moon passes in front of Mars, causing an occultation.

This event occurs nearly eight weeks after the Moon covered Mars over most of North America (except the Southeastern US and Atlantic Coast). On that occasion, Earth’s natural satellite will be fully illuminated, while Mars is opposite the Sun and glows with a blinding magnitude of almost -2.

Planet Mars and Earth.

But for this upcoming game of hide and seek, the Moon won’t be too bright (74 percent lit), nor will Mars. Having retreated 29.63 million miles (47.68 million km) farther from Earth since its December encounter, Mars appears less than a quarter as bright.

Nonetheless, the Moon will shine at magnitude -0.3 where it is still a brilliant object. Of the stars, only Sirius and Canopus shine brighter, and even for the casual observer, the yellow-orange Mars is most likely to catch the eye.

What will make this occultation far more striking and interesting than what happened in early December is the fact that Mars will appear to disappear behind the dark side of the Moon. Reappearance will occur from behind the luminous limbs.
