An unusual airbag has been patented in the USA

The American company Waymo, which is engaged in unmanned technologies, has patented an unusual airbag. The Autoevolution portal drew attention to the document.

The patent entitled “Deployable Protective Shell for Passenger” shows a technology that is designed to protect the passenger in the event of an accident.

In theory, this body should “hug” the passenger from all sides to avoid injury. According to the images, at the time of the accident, the “cocoon” should shoot from the seat and roof, enveloping the passenger.

The patent application was filed back in June 2018, but the technology certificate was issued by Waymo quite recently – the document describing the operation of the airbag was published only in December 2020. Given that Waymo was not told about the “protective enclosure”, the company is probably continuing to work on the technology.
