An unprecedented alliance to pilot the aircraft carrier of the future

A joint venture agreement (JV) will be signed on Monday by Éric Pommellet, CEO of Naval Group, and Laurent Castaing, general manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

The vast construction site of the new generation aircraft carrier (Pang), which will succeed the Charles-de-Gaulle by 2038, commits itself with the launch, Monday March 29, of the pre-project phase, intended to define its characteristics. Endowed with 200 million euros over two years, this first phase has been launched by Florence Parly from the Naval Group site in Lorient. The Minister of the Armed Forces must inaugurate the work platform for the future integrated team, bringing together Naval Group, prime contractor and responsible for the architecture of the boat and the combat system, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, in charge of manufacturing the hull of the Pang and civil fittings, and TecnicAtome, in charge of nuclear heating systems.

In order to steer this program throughout its life cycle, a joint venture agreement (JV), known as a project agreement, will be signed on Monday by Éric Pommellet, CEO of Naval Group, and Laurent Castaing, general manager of Chantiers of the Atlantic. Florence Parly must also announce in Lorient that the State has decided to bring forward by two years the delivery of two of the five defense and intervention frigates (FDI) ordered under the military programming law. The first will be delivered as planned in 2024. However, the next two will be delivered in 2025 instead of 2027. “This decision makes it possible to fill a load hole in Lorient”, specifies the Ministry of the Armed Forces. And to maintain jobs and skills. The last two IDFs are due for delivery in 2028 and 2029. In the meantime, Naval Group hopes to sign export contracts, particularly in Greece, where France “Leads intense discussions” to sell several boats, including four IDFs.
