Each year, the Missing Persons Unit of the police handles an average of a thousand files. After eight months, however, this year the counter lists “only” 373 alarming disappearances. This would be a consequence of measures related to the coronavirus.

During confinement, we expected a peak in disappearances, which ultimately never happened. On the contrary even. Alain Remue, member of the Missing Persons Unit, sees a number of explanations for this fall.
First, there is the stricter regulation of access to residential care centers. During a virus-free period, the cell must indeed search three to four times a week for an elderly person with dementia who has gone astray.
The number of disappearances among young people has also fallen sharply. “For this target group, the disappearances are often linked to the nightlife”, which was completely paralyzed by the crisis, explains Alain Remue. He takes the example of young people who stayed somewhere to sleep after a night out without informing their parents.
