The Ukrainian army benefited in its positions on the battlefield thanks to Soviet agricultural planning. One of these elements is the forest belts, wrote The Washington Post.
Soldiers from the Ukrainian armed forces, who are on the front line in the Donetsk region, told reporters that controlling strategic forest strips can be decisive for victory or defeat in a battle.
“The tree line is life,” said Alexander, a member of the National Guard’s 15th Brigade Artillery Team.
The publication recalls that the protection belts are trees that were planted decades ago throughout the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine. They are designed to stabilize adjacent fields and help reduce wind erosion.
A Ukrainian shooter named Maksim says that the best forest belts have a hill. Hilltops provide a stronger radio signal for drones and help infantry fire on enemy soldiers below.
According to Maxim, the forest strips have become one of the most valuable elements of the relief. He emphasized that they will have to regularly fight for such positions with Russian soldiers:
“This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The enemy uses them in the same way.”
The director of the Institute of Biomedical Technologies of the University of Ukraine, Valentina Movchan, said that the planting of belts began actively during the time of Joseph Stalin.
