An UN peacekeeping soldier died in an explosion in Mali

“All Czech soldiers operating in Mali are in order,” said Ministry of Defense spokesman Jan Pejšek.

“A MINUSMA member died when his convoy collided with an improvised explosive device in Tessalit, Kidal region early in the afternoon, four others seriously injured,” the mission said. The Tessalit oasis is located in the northeast of Mali near the border with Algeria.

Radical Islamists from groups linked to the al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS) terrorist networks are active in Mali and neighboring countries. The MINUSMA mission has been operating in the country since 2013. It serves over 18,000 people, including four Czechs, the mission states on its website.
