From Sony Pictures, directed by Justin Baldoni and written by Christy Hall, the adaptation of the successful novel by Texan writer Colleen Hoover, “It Ends with Us”, comes to theaters in Spain, “Romper el circo” (Breaking the Circle).
The film tells the story of Lily Bloom, a woman who, after living a traumatic childhood, is ready to rebuild her life in Boston, where she meets Ryle Kincaid, a renowned neurosurgeon, who also appears to be a charming man, but who will soon awaken the shadows of Lily’s past.
The film tells a story in which gender violence is very present, clearly identifying the signs, the suffering of the victim and the consequences in the future of those who experience these situations in childhood or adolescence. It also gives a clear message to both victims and aggressors on how to avoid repeating the patterns and teaches us that it is possible to close the circle before the damage is greater.
As for the film, it is a simple film, like the novel, but at the same time elegant in terms of the shots and photography, in which the urban landscape of Boston predominates in an exquisite way and in which there is a lot of play with flowers and also food and its color palettes, which make you almost smell them and taste each dish.
The music gives that dramatic and elegant touch at the same time, which makes the viewer feel closer to the characters.
The plot shifts appropriately between Lily Bloom’s past and present, which also helps those who were unable to read the book before going to the cinema to understand the story.
The rhythm is perhaps something that I missed in this film, since there were moments when it seemed a bit slow, in addition to the fact that it is a film with “little action” and a lot of dialogue, logically, like the novel.
The cast is quite risky, as there are no very familiar faces, but it has been a true revelation. Led by Blake Lively and Isabela Ferrer, both play Lily Bloom in her different stages and accompanied by Justin Baldoni himself in the role of Ryle along with Brandon Sklenar and Alex Neustaedter in the roles of Atlas at their different ages. In the cast we will also find Jenny Slate as Alyssa, Lily’s best friend and Ryle’s sister, and Hasan Minhaj as her endearing husband Marshall. The main cast is completed by Amy Morton as Jenny Bloom, Lily’s mother.
In short, I think the adaptation passes the test with flying colors and is worth it, just for the message it conveys, so there is no better plan to combat this heat than a cool afternoon at the cinema with “Romper el circolazo”.
