Cosmonautics Day
In 1961, on April 12, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on the Vostok-1 spacecraft and made an orbital flight around the Earth for the first time in the world. Yuri Gagarin spent 108 minutes in space, which was a breakthrough in the exploration of extraterrestrial space.
The ship landed safely near the village of Smelovka in the Saratov region.
The first space flight aroused great interest throughout the world, and the astronaut himself became a world celebrity.
The holiday “Cosmonautics Day” was established in 1962. Six years later it received international status, Aviation and Cosmonautics Day, which is still celebrated annually.
