An oil tanker is on fire in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany

The fire on the tanker Annika was reported at a quarter past ten. At the time, the ship was anchored in the Gulf of Mecklenburg. Rescue Baltic immediately entered the tanker and the vessel was instructed to extinguish and cool it.

“Soon he had Annika in tow,” he said Ostsee-Zeitung newsletter. Gradually, firefighting helicopters were also added.

The cause of the fire on the 73-meter long tanker is not yet clear. The emergency command in Cuxhaven, which is in charge of the rescue operation, confirmed that there are currently 640 tons of oil on board the Annika. That means it is “almost empty,” the paper said.

It was not clear at first how large the tanker’s crew was. It was later revealed that there were seven people on board.

As announced by the headquarters, they were all evacuated by the sea rescue boat Wilma Sikorski of the German Society for the Rescue of Castaways (DGzRS). Several crew members are injured, the paper said without further details.
