An NFT vending machine installed in New York

In New York, an astonishing distributor has just been set up. As reported Reuters on March 1st, no chocolate bars, drinks or candy bags in this machine, but non-fungible tokens (NFT). Indeed, the digital art collection platform Neon has launched the first NFT vending machine, with the aim of making online works of art easier to access for everyone.

The particularity: you have no idea of the digital work you are going to buy. This particular vending machine aims to attract “those curious about the cryptowho tried to buy some or were interested in buying an NFT, but just ran into too many obstacles,” Neon CEO Kyle Zappitell explained in an interview with Reuters.

Located in a small Wall Street storefront with a sign that reads “NFT ATM”, it looks like a traditional ATM, but features small paper boxes with QR Codes inside. The prices vary from 5.99 dollars to 420.69 dollars (i.e. between 5.50 euros and 386 euros). Once the code is scanned, the buyer can view their new artwork on any smartphone, laptop or tablet.

For Kyle Zappitell, the notion of mystery fits perfectly with digital art. “As an NFT collector, over time one of the things you love is the randomness: ‘Which one are you going to get?’ So that’s one of the most exciting things.” The transaction for the purchase of an NFT in this distributor is recorded and framed by the Solana blockchain, which guarantees carbon neutral transactions. And contrary to popular belief, the purchase at the distributor can be done in cash or by bank card and not in cryptocurrencies. With $3 million in seed capital, Neon hopes to roll out more NFT vending machines in malls and other public spaces.
