A fight between two Italian citizens who were living in Cuba ended up causing the death of one of them, a 76-year-old businessman identified as Francesco Sciammarella.
According to the Italian media Rete8the incident occurred last Friday, March 1 in the province of Las Tunas, but it was a fact that the official press never mentioned.
The aforementioned media indicates that the victim suffered a blow against a blunt object, which caused his death. Sciammarella had been residing on the Island for at least 20 years.
The aggressor was identified as Rolando Di Gregorio, 56 years old, who apparently owed the victim 500 euros. This debt would have started an argument that grew in intensity until it ended in a fight.
When questioned by the authorities, Di Gregorio indicated that he had arrived on the Island a week earlier, and confessed that his death had been a tragic accident that occurred after he lost his balance during the fight. In that sense, he firmly maintains that he never intended to end the life of his compatriot.
The detainee’s statements claim that the businessman hit Di Gregorio with a helmet, but he lost his balance due to the action and ended up falling backwards, hitting his head on the corner of a step.
After the blow, Sciammarella was taken to the hospital, where he received seven stitches, however, he died shortly after due to a brain hemorrhage.
The aforementioned Italian media maintains that the authorities of the Greater Antilles are investigating the case, and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is working together with the Italian Embassy in Havana to follow up. However, no state media has made mention of the death of a foreigner on the Island, due to the care taken by the regime when it comes to maintaining a good image in the international community.
