At the request of several countries around the world, the International Civil Aviation Organization agreed to conduct an independent investigation into the forced landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk.
Belarus officially justifies this action on suspicion that there may have been a bomb on the plane. However, Western leaders do not believe this explanation.
The European Union considers this to be a clear violation of the red line. That is why harsh sanctions have been imposed on Belarus’s exporting industries this week. Russia has criticized the move, saying that Europe is acting without waiting for the results of an objective investigation.
CONTEXT:
On May 23, a Ryanair plane carrying a member of the staff of Belarusian opposition leader Svyatlan Cihanouska, one of the founders of the opposition media Nexta and former editor-in-chief Roman Protasevich, landed in Minsk on the way from Athens to Vilnius on May 23. The plane was accompanied to the airport by Belarusian fighter jets.
