Afraid of being raped, robbed or beaten while going out at night? Worried about moving to a new neighborhood? A interactive map of delinquency in New York could answer your anxieties.
It is the first digital map made available to the public by the New York police, the largest in the United States, which has contributed to a sharp drop in crime in the Big Apple in recent years. Other American cities already have this type of site.
This map allows users to access police statistics on the delinquency and crime rate in a particular street, neighborhood or zone, in the five districts of the city. From January 2012 to October 2013, people can find, by month or year, the rates of murder, rape, theft, burglary, attack or petty theft per thousand inhabitants.
New York, once known for its high crime rate, now boasts of being America’s safest large city, with the nation’s lowest murder rate in 50 years. “The municipality relied on this data to fight crime,” said New York City Police Chief Ray Kelly. “This map helps New Yorkers and researchers better understand where crimes and misdemeanors still take place.”
The data are illustrated by blue dots, which show incidents per 1,000 inhabitants with, in yellow and orange, the most affected areas. This data can also help tourists to the Big Apple, which reached a record 54.3 million in 2013.
