An intense hailstorm surprises Alicante at dawn | Radio Alicante | Present

The DANA, which arrived in the province this past morning, did so with a hailstorm that had not been remembered in Alicante for a long time and with very high records in less than an hour. The El Altet observatory has registered in this time 68 liters per square meter, 32 in Alicante and 46 in Elche. The photo earlier this morning was still of the streets covered by the white blanket of ice.

A DANA that has created conditions of “strong instability” that has resulted, on the Mediterranean coast, in that “discharge of hail from south to north”, as explained by Jorge Olcina, the professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at the University of Alicante and director of the Laboratory of Climatology. The central part, between Alicante and Elche, has been the “most affected”.

Two factors have coincided, the cold drop in the upper layers of the atmosphere and a Mediterranean Sea that at the end of November still reaches 18 degrees of temperature. DANA will be on the Iberian Peninsula until this Friday. However, in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia the instability will be “in principle less and great waterspouts like the one this past morning are not expected,” he says. Catalonia and Aragon will now bear the worst. The province is going to notice the drop in temperature, although at noon the thermometer can reach 20 degrees.

Olcina recalls that these episodes “are not so normal” for this time of year in terms of the intensity of the storms. Climate change has changed the way it rains for years, explains the president of the Spanish Association of Geographers, so the cold drop risk calendar “must be extended throughout the year.”

Fire brigade and local police interventions

This episode of cold drop has not caused personal injuries, although it does leave some intervention of the firefighters throughout the province and at the request, in most cases, of the local police.

The special device organized by the Alicante City Council, which has lasted until 6:45 am on Tuesday, has made about twenty departures to different parts of the city.

The firefighters of the SPEIS of Alicante have intervened in the detachment of four roofs and seven emergencies to clean roofs, detachments of facades and accumulations of water. The most important, in Paraíso street, where at 4.30 am the false ceiling of a house was detached due to accumulation of water.

The firefighters have also intervened, at five in the morning, in a supermarket on Ausó and Monzó streets where part of the roof also fell. The establishment has been closed due to the risk of falling.

On Algol street, another false ceiling fell from a garage and they also acted on Castelar street, where the roof of another building was affected

For its part, the Local Police controlled different areas of the city affected by water. The rescue on the Ocaña highway of a tourism that was immobilized by the accumulation of water on the road stands out. As a consequence of the fallen waterspout, services have been attended by sewer traps outside their place in Uruguay street, Benassau, Salamanca avenue, Orihuela, Bilbao, Jorge Juan. For their part, several police crews have traveled to Doctor Rico Avenue where the water has displaced containers and caused damage to a motorcycle. Likewise, the Local Police have also intervened on the avenue of Elche, Denia, Villajoyosa, Doctor Jiménez Díaz, and on the beach of San Juan due to the rains.

Provincial firefighters

In Cox, Catral and Redován members of the Provincial Firefighters Consortium have carried out actions related to the intense rainfall. Due to breakage of glass as a result of hail, they have intervened in a building on Calle San Francisco de Asis and another on Avenida Cartagena or by the fall of part of the roof tiles of the church located on Calle San Francisco de Asis as a result of a small tornado, in Elche. They have also made water drains, such as the Morena street in Alfaz del Pi.
