An Inspiring Story of Overcoming Lymphoma and Family Support

He owes his life to an infection. Because it is thanks to that that Giancarlo Magalli discovered that he had lymphoma for which the doctors had given him two months to live but which now, after 18 months of treatment, he has managed to defeat. «The illness caught me off guard and came unexpectedly – confessed the host, guest of Mara Venier on “Domenica In” -. Then one inside the other, a kind of matryoshka. The serious one, which put me in danger, was lymphoma. They gave me two months to live, but they also told me that lymphomas have a 90% chance of healing. The lymph node was discovered, because I got an infection, a fortune was born from a misfortune. The last year and a half has passed between treatments, hospitalizations, chemotherapy.”

The help of the family

Married twice and father of two daughters, Magalli spoke of how his double family mobilized to assist him during these very complicated last months. “My ex-wives took turns at my bedside. For the infection they gave me some medicine that I don’t know what it was, I think hallucinogenic mushrooms, I had visions, I saw people walking around the room, I was completely out of it. I’ve also done things like ripped out my IV and the doctors said, “Either we tie him up or someone has to watch him, but we don’t have any staff,” so one night there was my first wife, one night my second, then my first daughter, the second… and they were careful that I didn’t act crazy. I was moved by this closeness.” Due to his illness he had to leave “I Fatti Vostri” and now, at 78 years old, he has to start from scratch (“I got sick, I left some programs and I didn’t find one when I got better”), despite a long career spent both behind and in front of the cameras.

My friend Boncompagni

“I worked with many, I tried to line up the names and it was two pages. Gianni Boncompagni was a fundamental person in my life and in my work. We were friends all our lives, he had an irony, a genius, an inventiveness, he was a person out of the ordinary. We have done many programmes, almost all of them successful”, admitted Magalli who owed his debut as a presenter to his lifelong friend, who passed away in 2017. «I was the author of “Pronto, Raffaella?” and I was always the author of “Hello, who’s playing?” with Enrica Bonaccorti. During the program Enrica became pregnant, she had a complication and had to be admitted to hospital. Gianni called me, I was in the kitchen, he rang the phone and said: “Tomorrow you’re on the air”.
