It was hard, trying, especially the first day between the train delay, the height differences and the rain, but Anne doesn’t regret anything about it. his thirty days in Spain, towards Santiago.
At 61, she decided to do it alone and it was experience that showed her the way. “I’ve been thinking about it for 10 years. I told myself that I would wait until retirement, until the day of my accident. » A bicycle hit her. “There, I said to myself: go for it. » Twice, she walked in France for 12 and then 20 days.
“I met incredible people”
This time, she wanted to go further. Head to Spain on July 30 for a thirty-day pilgrimage. “I had organized everything: the stages, the breaks in the accommodation. I chose to move forward with a 9 kg backpack. I had a book, maps and a mobile app. »
The first meters, during the ascent of the Pyrenees, were chaotic but Anne found her rhythm, covering up to 33 km in one day. “I met incredible people: Italians, Japanese, Koreans… Young people, older people, alone, in groups or in couples. »
Anne’s pilgrim’s booklet fills in as the stages progress.
Prepare before you start
To prepare, Anne Leick, who has worked for twenty years at Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains, walked every day and participated in IVV outings. “In Spain there are hostels, hotels, lodges. There are also meals for pilgrims at affordable prices. Along the way, we felt safe: the Civil Guard was present as well as the Red Cross. And even if I don’t really have a sense of direction, it’s difficult to get lost, the route is perfectly signposted. »
The challenge was met even if it was not easy. “It takes courage and a lot of introspection. You have to accept living in a summary way. It’s a return to basics. »
“Everyone has their reasons for getting started. It clicked for me when I saw a report on TV. I can’t wait to get back on the road”
Since her return, Anne can no longer sit still and is thinking about putting her hiking shoes back on. “I had no injuries, not a blister. Such a pilgrimage makes you think, to see life differently. To discover a country differently, as you walk. Santiago de Compostela is difficult to describe, you have to experience it to understand. Honestly, it’s accessible. »
Her 300 photos posted on her Instagram account catch her eye, as do the memories of the Hispanic dishes for which she still salivates. “Everyone has their reasons for getting started. It clicked for me when I saw a report on TV. I can’t wait to get back on the trail. »
