Monday 30 September could be the decisive day to clarify the dynamics of the crime of Maria Campai, the 42-year-old found dead last Friday in Viadana seven days after her disappearance. The 17-year-old student accused of voluntary and premeditated murder and concealment of a corpse will be subjected to a warrant interrogation by the Brescia Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office in the Beccaria prison in Milan where he has been locked up since last Friday.
It will be the opportunity to reiterate the confession of the crime made, in fact, with the indication to the police of the place where he had transported the body hidden under dry leaves and shrubs after the murder which took place in the garage owned by the family, where the boy he had had an intimate relationship with the woman, contacted on a paid dating chat. And the box itself will be brought to the attention of the RIS for a thorough inspection in search of other traces of the crime. The meeting with the magistrate will also be an opportunity for the 17-year-old to explain what happened and why that appointment with the woman turned into a tragedy. And what pushed him, a martial arts enthusiast and regular visitor to a gym in Viadana, to apparently kill the 42-year-old with his bare hands.
What is emerging from the digital devices seized by the police would overturn the idea that his fellow villagers had of him: a good boy who greeted everyone he met on the street, who in the gym helped those who had just started sporting activities with exercises and who attended the technical institute with diligence without creating particular problems for the professors.
The 17-year-old, however, would have a double personality which on social media or in the electronic games he played now appears disconcerting, with chilling features. “I wanted to know what it felt like to kill a person,” he told investigators immediately after being stopped; and in support of his words the police would have discovered that he frequented martial arts sites where he explained how to kill a person with his bare hands, as he himself asked the search engines.
On other social networks he showed particular admiration for Filippo Turetta, the murderer of Giulia Cecchettin, while on others he showed his muscular physique built with an assiduous, almost obsessive presence in the gym and inquired about extreme sex. That there is a lot to dig into his mind is demonstrated by his behavior during the seven days in which Maria Campai was searched everywhere, with molecular dogs, with appeals on television and with posters posted throughout the country: the boy has led his life every day, going regularly to school and the gym, and then returning home with his parents and two sisters to the apartment in the condominium in via Monteverdi in whose garage the crime would have taken place.
However, the victim’s cell phone cannot be found, on which the 42-year-old had received the coordinates of the meeting place and on the basis of which she had reached Viadana on Thursday 19 September by car with her sister from Parma where they lived. Perhaps the 17-year-old made it disappear so as not to be found.
It will also be the key day regarding Maria Campai’s autopsy examination. The Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office will appoint the doctor who should carry out the autopsy probably as early as Tuesday. A fundamental step to understand how the woman died and which, upon initial external examination of the body, showed signs of strangulation and blows received on the head and face.
Her sister Roxana has no doubts about the responsibilities: «It was the 17-year-old man with whom I saw Maria go away that evening. I recognized him a few days later when, with other friends and relatives, we scoured Viadana for a week looking for someone who could give us news of Maria. I photographed him and passed everything to the police who then went to him.”
