In the future, the building will provide information about nature, the landscape and tourist opportunities on the Kandel. In addition, changing rooms, toilets and storage facilities are planned.
On the Kandel, the highest mountain in the district at 1242 meters, the construction work for the “Infopoint” has begun after several years of preparation. The construction pit for the building, a solid wood construction made from local timber, is currently being excavated. Due to the corona, an official groundbreaking ceremony was not carried out, the district office announced.
In future, the Infopoint will make everything worth knowing about the Kandel, such as nature and landscape, energy generation and tourist opportunities, in a modern exhibition for adults and children. Changing rooms and storage facilities for hikers and winter sports enthusiasts as well as public toilets will also be set up in the building. PNV users can wait for the bus in it. A photovoltaic system on the flat roof should largely contribute to its own energy supply.
At the heart of the 13-meter-long and eight-meter-wide building is the information on the “Mountain of Power” in three languages. The scientific concept for this is created by the Institute for Environmental Social Sciences and Geography – Heritage Interpretation working group – at the University of Freiburg. It was also responsible for the stela project with 42 three-sided information pillars on the “Mountain of Power” distributed over the Kandel area.
The interiors are designed by the University of Freiburg
In the info point, visitors should learn interesting facts about geology, plants and animals, history, curiosities and the environment, nature and landscape protection in the Kandelbergland. Your awareness of this special habitat should be strengthened. Because the Kandel Plateau and parts of the Kandel Forest are FFH and bird protection areas as well as landscape protection areas, on the summit there are numerous biotopes as well as the high moor as a natural monument. The visitor will also receive tips on tourist offers, a large overview map with hiking trails, and Kandela, the witch popular with young candelabras, will also play a role.
To upgrade the local mountain, the district of Emmendingen, together with the four neighboring communities of Waldkirch, Simonswald, St. Peter and Glottertal, has been planning such an information center for a long time. Its client is now the district, the planning lies with the district office. Architect Patricia Haas from the Office for Building Construction and Real Estate created the drafts and plans for the building, while her colleague Lars Dohrmann took over the construction management. The construction companies involved in the foundation and construction of the building will not have too far to go to the construction site in the next few months, as they come from the Elz and Simonswldertal valleys. The interior of the information center is completely designed by the University of Freiburg – Institute for Environmental Social Sciences and Geography.
District office is the builder
The broad support for the project shows the importance and attachment of the candelabra for the region. The district and the local authorities of the Kandel, i.e. the city of Waldkirch and the communities of Simonswald, St. Peter and Glottertal, have provided the financial means for the info point as a joint project, with significant support from the Leader (EU program) action group of the Southern Black Forest and the Southern Black Forest Nature Park . The district and the municipalities can be pleased that supporters and sponsors have also found themselves ready to support the project. The Sparkasse Freiburg-Nrdlicher Breisgau is contributing 30,000 euros. EnBW provided a sum of 15,000 euros for the photovoltaic system. The second country tourism supports the project in front of the house door with almost 6000 euros.
