The Center for Disease Prevention and Control has announced the beginning of an influenza epidemic on Thursday, March 17. This is done when, in one area where influenza is monitored, the incidence exceeds 100 cases per 100 000 inhabitants in one week.
The number of influenza patients in Daugavpils has reached 384 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but in Liepāja – 39.6. Children in the age group of five to fourteen are more likely to be ill. Last week, 32 patients were hospitalized in Daugavpils and one flu patient in Jēkabpils. Ten patients are under the age of four, 13 are between the ages of five and fourteen, eight are between the ages of 15 and 64, and two are over the age of 65. If the registered patient lives in the area of the doctor’s main activity, then during the epidemic, the home visits of family doctors to the flu patients are paid from the state budget. These patients only have to pay a national patient fee of € 2.85 for the visit. The spread of influenza usually lasts until the end of May.
