The spring festival – canceled last year due to the pandemic – will instead look to summer for its next edition, spanning 12 days starting June 9. Tribeca will screen films in locations outside of the city, including Battery, Hudson Yards, Pier 57 Rooftop, Brookfield Place, MetroTech Commons in Brooklyn, and Empire Outlets in Staten Island. The festival will also use a 12-meter high-definition screen at other locations.

“The Tribeca Film Festival grew out of our mission to bring people together in the aftermath of September 11th. We always do, ”said Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.

“And as New York emerges from the shadows of COVID-19, it seems right to bring people together again in person for our festival on the 20th.e anniversary. ”

Tribeca has gradually broadened the footprint of its annual festival, extending beyond its namesake downtown district. He has regularly organized outdoor “drive-in” style screenings in the streets of the city, an initiative that he extended nationwide last year in a series of “drive-in” screenings. across the country to screen classic films.

Major film festivals – the Berlin International Film Festival and the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas – have so far been held virtually. Last year, Tribeca also uploaded a small section of movies.

But with the increase in vaccinations and the potential seasonality of the virus, the summer is shaping up to be brighter for the world’s biggest film festivals. The Cannes Film Festival, which is usually held in May, aims for an in-person festival in July.

Tribeca’s plans were made in concert with the NY PopsUp initiative, which is working to bring back live entertainment. Tribeca organizers and contributors hope this year’s festival will help spur the city’s revitalization.

“This year the festival is once again shining a light on the resilience and creativity of our city, and just as we have been doing from the start, Bloomberg is happy to support this great tradition, which will once again help elevate the city. ‘spirit of our city,’ said former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, a regular contributor to Tribeca.
