Among the different lots that make up the upcoming Mecum Auctions auction in Arizona, we have come across the impressive collection of Steve Todhunter. A massive set of several limited edition Ferraris and some of the most spectacular classic American supercars and muscle cars.
It is not at all uncommon to find large batches or even entire collections of classics and exotic vehicles on sale simultaneously. This is because ironically one of the few things that wealthier collectors usually don’t have is space. Well, many have the ability to fill their garage at a much higher speed than they are capable of expanding them, so they are constantly in the position of having to get rid of units in the attempt to make room for their next acquisitions, which in many cases are requested long in advance.
Steve Todhunter It seems to be one of these collectors, as the auction house Mecum Auctions has announced the sale of a large number of its limited edition sports cars and American classics. Though this large set of vehicles represents only a fraction of your entire collection, which is known for a fact, is made up of numerous American muscle cars and the most expensive and exclusive supercars on the market.
Even so, this group of vehicles is large enough to form a collection of its own and also composed of very remarkable models, in some cases valuable and well-known unique pieces. Well, among the 20 vehicles we can find several limited edition Ferraris and some very rare and sought-after parts of American motorsport.
Ferrari
The main axis of this collection are the numerous copies that we can find from the Maranello firm, the brand that contributes more copies to this set, since of the 17 sports cars no less than 7 belong to this Italian brand. And what is more remarkable, some are really exceptional models due to their exclusivity. The most outstanding pieces are the Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, the Ferrari 575 Superamerica, the Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider 16M, the Ferrari F12tdf or the Ferrari 599 GTO. All of them limited edition models with quite low production figures and that have long had the status of a collector’s item.
All new vehicles, both current sports cars and younger classics that make up this small collection show really low mileage figures. The model with the most kilometers is the Mercedes SLS, which has 2,326 miles of use (3,743 km), and the one with the least is the 599 GTO, with only 175 miles (281 km). All the others are in this arc of figures.
Classics
In addition to the most current models we also find several muscle cars and some very prominent and valuable American classics. Models that precisely because they appear in a collection they will not get the media attention they deserve for its rarity and value.
As we can see in the list below, the Todhunter collection has no less than 4 copies of the Ford Mustang, but all of them corresponding to very valuable sports versions. The two most modern examples belong to the fifth generation of the model and are signed by Shelby American, a Shelby GT350 from 2011 and a Shelby GT500 Super Snake from 2009. While the classic examples are individual Mustang Boss 429 Fastback from 1970, also from the most valuable pieces from the auction itself.
Shelby 427 Cobra FAM
The last piece is the best of the lot, as it is not only a Shelby 427 Cobra equipped with the 7.0-liter big-block engine, but a very rare specimen with S / C specifications (Semi Competition) and which belongs to an edition that was never released, the FAM (acronym for “Ferrari’s Ass is Mine”). Hence its bodywork appears painted in Rosso Corsa with the interior in brown leather. To top it all, this specimen belonged to Paul Walker, so it is a piece with great added value.
