Louisiana voters on Tuesday approved an amendment to the state’s constitution that prevents courts from recognizing “the right to abortion” or from funding it publicly. The author of the amendment was state senator Katrina Jackson from the Democratic Party, who was supported by many representatives of both parties.
Amendment “love life”
According to the Associated Press, the amendment, known as “Love Life,” passed 64 percent of the vote. It stipulates that “nothing in this constitution may be interpreted as securing or protecting the right to abortion or requiring funding for an abortion”.
It’s important to understand that the First Amendment isn’t a ban on abortion. It simply keeps abortion policies in the hands of our legislators, not state judges
Jackson wrote in an article in The Advocate last month.
Our set of life-saving laws provides women with access to knowledge about pregnancy before abortion, guarantees that minors seeking an abortion have parental consent, and children born alive after an unsuccessful abortion receive immediate medical care. Under our law, no state tax dollar finances abortion. However, these and other rights are at risk if we do not adopt the first amendment
– emphasized the senator.
Law in Louisiana
Louisiana has already passed a law that will prohibit abortion in a state – except where the mother’s life is at stake – if the US Supreme Court overturns its ruling more than 40 years ago in the Roe versus Wade case, which the Republicans are counting on. In this decision, the Supreme Court recognized the right to abortion as the “fundamental constitutional right” of every woman and legally sanctioned abortion on demand throughout the country. However, many states have since introduced a number of restrictions.
