To see the innovations planned in the future University Hospital Center (CHU) of Guadeloupe, a visit is essential. Exactly, this is virtually possible! The premises in which users will soon operate meet the latest standards in force in terms of security. The new establishment in Belle Plaine, in Les Abymes, whose construction site is entering its final phase, aims to be modern in terms of equipment and operation.
Soon, staff, patients and other users of the Guadeloupe University Hospital Center (CHUG) will work within a brand new establishment: the one whose construction is currently being finalized, in Belle Plaine, in Les Abymes.
It is a technological gem that was erected on site. Its value amounts to 580 million euros.
The new CHUG was designed to respond to the health challenges of the coming years in the archipelago.
The Belle Plaine site is divided into eight large groups, respectively dedicated to care and administrative services. The infrastructure combines an impressive technical platform, medical and surgical units; it has an amphitheater and more than 600 beds.
The buildings of this hospital cover 78,000 m2; they are of reasonable size, designed with a certification approach in mind.high environmental quality” (HQE).
Exteriors included, they cover 19 hectares.
Seismic isolators, installed in number, make these new premises a structure capable of withstanding strong tremors, but also cyclonic episodes. The premises are therefore secure, adapted to local realities, in particular to cope with climatic and seismic hazards.
The installation of heavy equipment, such as MRIs, scanners and particle accelerators is underway and should enable this single-site university hospital to treat a wide range of pathologies. All patient care and support services will therefore be located in one place; including the Parent Child Center, which will leave the Palais Royal site to join Belle Plaine.
Visitor and staff car parks will offer nearly 2,000 parking spaces, for intuitive and quick access to the different wings of the site.
Finally, a helipad, giving access to the 18 operating theater rooms, should provide rapid emergency response.

As a reminder, the former general hospital, which became CHU in 1986, was inaugurated on September 1, 1936, to the east of the city of Pointe-à-Pitre.

All of the indoor and outdoor spaces of the CHUG de Belle Plaine can be visited, but only virtually for now! The hospital has put a very efficient tool online to a life-size immersionaccessible to all; the opportunity to discover, before its time, an establishment at the cutting edge of technology.
The construction site is also revealed in a video.
After several years of construction work, the move from Chauvel to Belle Plaine is being prepared with peace of mind. A transfer protocol, coupled with a common operating project, was co-signed by the hospital management and the majority union, the Union of Health Workers (UTS-UGTG), on Wednesday October 16, 2024.
The handover of the keys to the new university hospital is announced for the end of January 2025 and the reception of the first patient at the end of the second quarter of the same year, after a period of dry operation.
