An extraordinary discovery in Pompeii. Archaeologists have found a preserved chariot that was used only for ceremonies World

Rome Archaeologists have found a ceremonial chariot in very good condition near Pompeii. It was made of iron, wood, bronze and tin and was found at the stables of an old villa about 700 meters north of Pompeii, which was buried by the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79.

The director of the Pompeii excavations, Massimo Osanna, said that this was the first find of this kind in the Pompeii region. The carriages found there so far were intended for the normal operation and movement of people and cargo or in agriculture, not for ceremonies.

Archaeologists are working to find a carriage.

In the case of the ceremonial carriage, mineralized wooden parts and prints of organic material, such as decorations from plants, were also found. The carriage was in the hall in front of the stables, where the remains of three horses were found in 2018, including one harnessed horse.

“It’s an extraordinary discovery that shifts our understanding of the old world,” Osanna said. According to him, the found carriage only traveled during holidays, such as parades or processions. The Ministry of Culture speaks of a “unique find unparalleled in Italy”.

Pompeii is located 23 kilometers southeast of Naples and was home to 13,000 people at the time of Mount Vesuvius. So far, about two-thirds of the city has been discovered, and organized discovery began in the mid-18th century.

“The discoveries in Pompeii continue to amaze us and will continue to be so for many years to come, as another 20 hectares of land need to be discovered,” said Culture Minister Dario Franceschini.

The excavations in Pompeii provide an insight into the lives of people at the turn of the century and are among the most popular places in Italy for tourists. In 2019, 3.9 million people visited Pompeii.
