An extraordinary case: Don José faces breast cancer – La Voz de la Frontera

In accordance with data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), in Mexico They registered 23,790 new cases of breast cancer between people of 20 years and more during 2022.

The national incidence was 27.64 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Although breast cancer primarily affects women, with an incidence of 51.92 cases per 100,000 women aged 20 years and older, it also occurs in men, although with a considerably lower incidence of 1.25 cases per 100,000 men aged 20 years and older.

José Guillen Trujillo, 58, is a breast cancer survivor who, thanks to early detection resulting from self-examination and concern for his body, can now share his story and raise awareness in society about such a delicate subject, surrounded by taboos and prejudices.

José’s ordeal began a few years ago, when he started to feel strong pains and burning in his chest, accompanied by some “little balls” that, over time, grew and changed color.

“I decided to go to the General Hospital to get checked, but when I was standing in line I fainted”Mr. Guillen recalls with anguish.

Unfortunately, cancer was not his only problem, as he also had to face criticism from society, who through their comments, marginalized and discriminated against him, linking the loss of his breasts with his sexuality.

“There were a lot of comments when I had my surgery, like ‘gay’ or ‘sorry f**ker'”were some of the comments he remembers receiving from coworkers.

“But how can you fight with someone who is making fun of you, if all you want is peace?”

Despite having been treated successfully the first time, with the disappearance of Seguro Popular, José was left adrift, unable to attend his routine check-ups.

Now, the pain and burning sensation have returned, leaving the reinstatement of Seguro Popular as her last hope to be able to continue her fight against this terrible disease.

“They say they are going to reestablish Seguro Popular, so I hope it is true”said Mr. Guillen.

Finally, she did not hesitate to send a message to men who, for cultural and masculinity reasons, often do not pay attention to the signals their body sends them.

“They should not be inhibited, they should not lock themselves away in the pride of being men, they should be more open, whatever part of their body they are, they should take care of themselves and report whatever they feel, and they should not be afraid. Society is going to judge us anyway.”said Jose, the man with the 1 in a thousand statistic.

“People are not measured by a breast or a piece of meat and we do not lose our value because of that, neither women nor men”he said.

Mr. José currently lives with María Guadalupe and Julián Cruz, who suffered from a cardiovascular disease, leaving him without movement.

For this reason, they are asking for the community’s help to cope with the delicate situation they find themselves in.
