An expensive new sample has replaced oil

A new gem sample has emerged this week. One kilogram of wholesale sugar increased in wholesale price to BGN 2.58, a year-on-year jump of nearly 82%, according to data from the State Commodity Trade and Markets Commission / DKSBT / . For comparison, sugar at this time last year was 1.42 BGN wholesale. The problem is that about 1/3 of the raw material is produced in Bulgaria and the rest is imported. The years 2021-2022 are passing with a severe drought in Europe, which has been reflected in a lower yield of beets, therefore less production and less supply, explained the only plant in Bulgaria, that of Gorna Oryahovitsa. We know by heart the additional factors for rising prices: rising costs of energy, transport and wages.

With the leap of the lion, sugar has dethroned the previous n. 1 according to consumer sentiments: oil. Its price has increased in one year by 44% and currently starts at 4.78 BGN per liter. On the store shelf, it ended up well over BGN 5 per bottle.

A little imperceptibly for customers, however, eggs also began to rise in price spikes. At the moment, one is being wholesaled for an average of 33 cents, again according to data from the DKSBT. However, this is the first link in the chain. Store suppliers offer it for 38 cents, and retail can be found at 42-45 cents a piece. So, we’re heading towards the “two eggs for one” formula. The eggs were more or less the same at Easter, when, due to increased demand, traders had anticipated prices. The increase in the price of eggs is becoming more and more unnoticed by customers, because in the last year they have not gone straight and only gone up, but have returned a few cents back, according to the stores according to the delivery prices.

Thus, the top 3 products with the fastest price increase in a year are formed as follows: sugar, cow cheese / growth is more than 56% / and eggs / + 51% /.

Now, however, new prices are being set for factory-made winter meat: tomato puree and canned gherkins are rising, store owners in Plovdiv report. They have already been warned by suppliers that they will have to change the labels again and for some goods the increase will be between 30 and 40%. And there are even more drastic examples. For example, tomato puree, which is sold in large boxes mainly for pizzerias, costs from BGN 9 to BGN 21. This will necessarily increase the price of the pizzas along the chain. One possible reason is that the puree was made from more expensive tomatoes, which did not significantly decrease even in the summer, despite the seasonal offer. This also applies to imports.
