An exhibition and contemporary dance experience “Dārziņš” was created. What would have happened if he hadn’t fallen off the train that fateful night in August?

The initiator of the idea is choreographer Liene Grava, whose interest in the life and fate of Emīlas Dārziņš (1875–1910) prompted her to cooperate with director Roberta Rubīnas and music reviewer Orestas Silabriedi.

Together, the idea of an exhibition that tells the story of a composer whose beloved melodies and tragic life has always provoked reflection on how a creative spirit lives with its identity and how the choices made by a person affect his life.

In the seven rooms of the exhibition, which were created by scenographer Ieva Kauliņa, artworks created in the original technique of artist Kristina Rubīnes, quotations from periodicals, pieces of music by Emīls Dārziņš, a poem, a video and a significant painting by Emīlijas Gruzītes are exhibited.

The artist of the exhibition, Kristina Rubīna, reveals about the selected author’s technique: “In this story about Emīla Dārziņas, I chose to use the weave technique as a guiding motif, which helps to bring structure and connect different images. Space, landscapes and sea views create moods, while the relationship between the photographs and the weaves, which are revealed and detached, gives a subtle hint about the turning points and dramas of Emīls Dārzis’s life events.”

For three evenings, the audience will have the opportunity to expand their ideas about Emīla Dārziņas by watching a contemporary dance show created by Liene Grava, performed by dancer Artūrs Nīgalis. The original music for the show was jointly composed by electronic music author Oyaarss and guitarist Mārcis Auziņš.

The authors of the exhibition were occupied with questions: what would have happened if Dārziņš had not fallen from the train on the fateful August night, and what would have been the fate of the opera “Rožainas dynas” composed by him? There is no answer to these questions, but the creators of the exhibition dare to offer their version, while the curious viewer has the opportunity to create his own story about Emīla Dārziņa from all of this.

The dance performance will take place on July 28, August 10 and 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the “Riga art room”.
