„This gives us grounds to claim that a kind of energy alliance has already been formed between Russia and China,” the diplomat emphasized at a press conference.
Denisov called energy “basis of bilateral cooperation in the material sphere”, predicted the continued high demand for Russian natural gas in China and also said that the countries are currently actively discussing new projects in the field of blue fuel supplies.
In early January, Novatek signed a 15-year contract with China’s Zhejiang Energy for the annual supply of up to one million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced by Arctic LNG 2.
Gazprom supplies gas to China through the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. The first section from the Chayandinskoe field in Yakutia to Blagoveshchensk (the border with China), about 2,200 kilometers long, was commissioned at the end of 2019, and the second, from the Kovikta field to Chayandinskoe, nearly 800 km, is planned to be commissioned in early 2023
According to the terms of the contract with China’s CNPC, the volume of supplies should increase annually until reaching the design capacity of 38 billion cubic meters by 2025. At the same time, an increase in exports to 44 billion cubic meters of gas per year is being discussed.
According to Beijing, trade between Russia and China increased by 35.8% in 2021 and amounted to a record 146.887 billion dollars. Chinese exports for the reporting period increased by 33.8% on an annual basis – up to 67.565 billion dollars, supplies from Russia to China – by 37.5%, amounting to 79.322 billion dollars.
