AMMONNEWS – A retired man has been jailed for 10 years after he brutally murdered his dementia-stricken wife using tools from home
John Berry, 85, killed Edna, to whom he was married for more than six decades, in February last year.
Berry said he attacked Edna with tools from their home after he lost his temper because she fell and then “kicked and scratched him” as he tried to help her.
The court heard that the woman suffered at least 14 injuries after Berry attacked her with a bat, hammer and mortise.
When emergency services arrived, the criminal was standing outside, while his wife was dying on the floor of their bedroom.
When the police arrived at the crime scene, Perry told them that he had lost his temper after Edna attacked him after she fell.
Before her death, the woman was heard calling for her husband as she was dying. She was taken to hospital where she tragically died.
It is noteworthy that the husband cared for his wife greatly, as before the crime, he had gone to the pharmacy to get her medicine. He also cared for her for several years and took care of all her needs and requirements
But he admitted that he completely lost his temper after feeling helpless and unable to cope, and said that she did not deserve what happened to her.
Perry was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 10 years before being considered for parole. The man showed no reaction when he was sentenced.
