An easy-to-implement New Year’s resolution: Donate blood at the UKL – News from Leipzig

For Prof. Reinhard Henschler, Director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine (ITM) at the UKL and his team, this campaign is a good opportunity to thank all donors for their support this year. The current situation poses enormous challenges for the provision of life-saving blood products, especially due to the changed situation of the corona pandemic.

A few days before the end of the year, Prof. Reinhard Henschler, director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine at the UKL, a first balance sheet. “The UKL Blood Bank can look back on an exhausting, but ultimately successful year in 2021: In 2021 we were once again able to welcome around 14,000 blood donors who together made over 27,000 whole blood donations.”

Even under conditions that remained difficult, it was possible to obtain the number of whole blood donations in 2021 compared to the level before the pandemic. The number of plasma withdrawals even increased in 2021. This result is an enormous achievement by all blood donors and also by the blood bank team, said Reinhard Henschler.

The HAPPY NEW YEAR campaign with the support of the company LEIPZIG FOR FRIENDS HSW Vorteilskarten GmbH comes exactly at the right time: “We really appreciate the commitment of our donors and are therefore very happy that we are now looking forward to something special Way to say thank you. This year we have had to ask people who would like to donate blood for their quick help with major appeals. Fortunately, this has borne fruit, and we were still just able to avert threatening deficits.

Nevertheless, we became very aware that without the regular support of our blood donors, we would no longer have been able to meet the strong demand for life-saving blood products in recent months, ”reports Reinhard Henschler.

Patients with COVID19 illnesses in intensive care units also often need blood. “The care of COVID19 patients is also particularly demanding for our facility. When bleeding occurs, people with COVID19 need more donated blood than other patients in intensive care units, ”explains Prof. Henschler.

If these patients then also have to be connected to a so-called ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), they are dependent on significantly more blood products, because “COVID19 increases the bleeding tendency many times over,” says the doctor.

The UKL blood bank’s HAPPY NEW YEAR campaign

All UKL blood donors (regardless of whether they are whole blood, plasma or platelet donors) received in the period from 3.1. From 2022 to February 28, 2022, as part of the campaign, a LEIPZIG FOR FRIENDS – 2 to 1 advantage card.
