A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook the states of New York and New Jersey this Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The agency reported a tremor with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, with the epicenter near Lebanon, New Jersey, about 75 kilometers west of New York.
The tremor, which lasted several seconds, could be felt throughout the city, from Brooklyn to the Bronx or Manhattan, according to testimonies from numerous Internet users.
“My team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” Governor Kathy Hochul said on the X social network.
The New York City Fire Department indicated that there were no “major incidents” and that authorities continue to “monitor” the city.
Meanwhile, the Mayor’s Office of New York indicated in X that at the moment they do not have any impact report and that they are evaluating the situation.
“In the event of an aftershock, lie on the ground, cover your head and neck and take additional cover under solid furniture, next to an interior wall or in a door,” warns X deputy mayor of communications, Fabien Levy.
On this social network, many residents of New York and New Jersey indicated that they had felt the tremor for a few seconds, to such an extent that the earthquake label is among the X trends.
The X account of the legendary Empire State Building skyscraper, as a joke, posted the following message: “I AM FINE.”
