An average of 39,000 Dutch people die each year with type 1 or type 2 diabetes | Inland

According to the researchers, the life expectancy of people with diabetes depends on the extent to which their blood glucose is under control and the occurrence of complications, such as cardiovascular disease and problems with the kidneys. For diabetics between the ages of 45 and 70 with type 2 diabetes, the risk of death is twice as high as for others and for people with type 1 even five times greater, the fund says. “The life expectancy of people aged 45 with type 1 is on average 13 years lower and for type 2 on average four years lower than for people without diabetes.” Data up to and including 2019 were used for the study, i.e. before the outbreak of the corona crisis.

Almost 1.2 million Dutch people now suffer from diabetes and that will probably increase to more than 1.4 million in 2040, according to a spokeswoman on the eve of the collection week from 1 to 6 November. The aforementioned complications can already be prevented and treated better and better. However, a lot of money is still needed for ongoing and future studies to improve the fight against the disease. The fund mentions the artificial pancreas and research into faecal transplantation as important developments in order to better help patients. More research into the further influence of lifestyle on the disease process is also important.
