The audio drama deals with Marin from both his private life and politics. For the project, Karhula interviewed people who know Marin, whose names he cannot reveal. The project somewhat changed Karhula’s own perception of Marin.
– Now I understand even better why it was very difficult for him to continue in Finnish politics. We had to dive even deeper into the pressure and raw power struggle that has been during his prime ministership, the director tells Iltalehte.
– I understand why it broke him up so much. Maybe I grew to sympathize with the fact that it has been such a hellish place. Yes, they can be quite brutal here too, although it seems that Finnish politics is dull compared to other countries, he adds.
Karhula also had one idea about Marin confirmed through the interviews.
– I already thought when I started this that Sanna Marin is a contradictory type. Based on these interviews, he also seemed like that. There are a lot of different and strong opinions for and against him.

Karhula believes that the conflicting perception is possibly due to the fact that people have known Marin in a different time and in a different role.
– But he definitely also has all those different sides that are extreme. At the same time, he knows how to push both the common interest and his own interest exceptionally strongly, the director reflects.
– I found it interesting that many people said in interviews about Marin: “Why does everyone always want to talk about him, could we sometimes talk about something else?” Next, however, they talked for two hours about Marin. So he is an interesting guy with many sides, he adds.

In the interviews, Karhula also faced the perception of many that Marin has no friends in the parliament. According to Karhula, some politicians felt that they were good friends with Marin. The interviews made Karhula think about how many people really know Marin very well.
– I haven’t met a single person who claims to know him completely. Many of his childhood and student friends have been left behind. She has a lot of influencer acquaintances these days, but how well do they actually know Sanna? Or is it more of a mutual benefit? Karhula opens his thoughts.
– I got the impression that Sanna Marin wants to control very precisely what is said and thought about her. Sometimes that control can reach quite close, he says.
Marin fell silent
According to Karhula, Marini was asked for an interview for the audio drama, but the ex-prime minister never answered the message.
– His assistant has asked when this will come out, so yes they are aware of this. We have also sent him greetings that he can come and listen to the recordings. But he hasn’t come, says the director.
– Maybe he thinks that if he gave us an interview, we could think that the audio drama is Marin’s claim about the events. I understand that decision, and it has not brought this project down, he analyzed.

Karhula believes that Marin might find it strange to hear the audio drama version of his thoughts.
– I hope he doesn’t feel bad. This project is not a fan picture of Sanna Marini, but it is not intended to make fun of her either, he emphasizes.
The director also believes that the audio drama will receive a mixed reception from the audience.
– Those who hate Sanna Marini are certainly not satisfied. On the other hand, those who are crazy fans of him think that certain things should not be talked about here.
– We want to tell what we think his journey has looked like and as truthfully as possible, he emphasizes at the end.
