An attempt was made to assassinate a border guard in Daugavpils on Friday morning

Kristīne Pētersone, a spokeswoman for the State Border Guard, confirmed that a border guard had been injured on Friday morning after an attack in one of Daugavpils’ residential areas. The victim was provided with emergency medical assistance at Daugavpils Regional Hospital.

Lāsma Kursīte, a representative of the Latgale Region Office of the State Police, informed that today at around 7 o’clock the police received information that an assassination attempt had taken place.

The State Border Guard employee, born in 1973, was attacked by two unidentified persons while going to work on Stāvā Street. The attackers used tear gas and hit the victim’s head and body several times with a hammer-like object.

The man managed to get out of the attackers and call for medical help.

The nature of the crime and the circumstances in which it was committed give reason to believe that an attempted murder has taken place in connection with the victim’s professional activities, the police said.

The police call to refer to the drivers of cars equipped with video recorders, who were driving this morning along Stāvo Street and its surroundings, as well as the rest of the New Forstate district.

The police also call on the public, especially the residents of the settlement, to provide any information about suspicious persons and cars, as well as other information useful for the investigation.

For information, the police call 110 or 26 624 879 or contact the nearest State Police station in person. Anonymity will be guaranteed.
