Two Israeli soldiers were killed and 24 wounded in a drone strike from Iraq early Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced.
The dead soldiers were identified as Daniel Aviv Haim Sofer, a 19-year-old sergeant; and Tal Dror, a corporal of the same age. Both belonged to the 13th Battalion of the Golani Brigade, from Jerusalem.
According to an IDF investigation, two explosive-laden drones were launched from Iraq in the attack, one of which was shot down by air defenses and the other hit an army base in the northern Golan Heights.
In addition to the two dead soldiers, 24 others were injured in the attack, including two seriously, one moderately seriously and 21 slightly.
The news comes after the Israeli Army claimed this Friday to have killed about 100 Hezbollah militiamen in southern Lebanon during the last day, according to the local newspaper The Times of Israel.
The militiamen of the pro-Iranian group died both from the constant Israeli bombings against the south of the country – only this morning the Army ordered the evacuation of 37 villages that became targets of the Hebrew aviation – and from the ground combats between soldiers and assets of the Hezbollah.
With the confirmation of the death of these two soldiers, 11 have lost their lives so far as a result of these fighting, which began when the Army launched its “limited” ground operations in southern Lebanon in the early hours of Tuesday.
“Under the direction of the 36th Division, the soldiers of the 188th Armored Brigade have carried out limited and localized land incursions,” a military statement on the movements of the uniformed personnel stated this morning.
The soldiers acted against Hezbollah command centers embedded, according to the Army, in civilian villages.
“In the last 24 hours, troops have discovered rocket launcher ammunition, anti-tank missiles and rockets inside a residence,” added the armed forces, who claimed to have found the cache next to a bed in a room that displayed a painting by what was Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Israel killed the leader of the pro-Iran group last Friday in a bombing in Beirut, triggering a massive attack in response from Iran – also in retaliation for the death of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran – against its territory, in which The Islamic Republic launched about 180 ballistic missiles.
In the early hours of this Friday, Israeli aircraft bombed various targets in the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahye, where the intensity of the attacks caused several buildings to collapse and where the Hebrew press claims that the candidate for leader of the Shiite group was attacked. Hezbollah, Hashem Safi al Din.
Israel and Hezbollah have been at odds since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, but violence rose to an unprecedented level about ten days ago, when Israeli forces began a massive bombing campaign that has devastated towns and entire towns. In this context, for a week now, the Dahye has been the target of intense waves of air attacks almost daily.
