Virtual Telescop Project founder Gianluca Masi said the asteroid approached Earth at a safe distance, about 87 percent of the average distance from Earth to the Moon. The average distance from Earth to the Moon is 384,400 kilometers.
NASA monitors the movement of asteroids using telescopes and partner space observation equipment coordinated by the Planetary Defense Coordination Office.
While NASA didn’t find the problem imminent, they were testing defense technology to be proactive.
An example is the 550-kilogram DART spacecraft that will hit a small asteroid called Dimorphos in September or October. The goal is to change the asteroid’s orbit around its larger companion, Didymos.
