In less than two weeks, a huge asteroid approaches Earth and flies past it at dizzying speed. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), this object poses a potential threat to our planet.
The huge asteroid 1994 PC1 is expected to fly around the Earth on January 18 at a distance of 1.98 million kilometers, which is about five times the distance of the Moon from our planet. According to experts, the building has a diameter of at least one kilometer, so it is 2.5 times taller than the Empire State Building in New York.
In addition, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) lists it as a “potentially dangerous space object.” According to the portal RT.com however, the chances of it colliding with the Earth are extremely low.
The asteroid was discovered by Australian astronomer Robert McNaught in 1994. The object moves at a speed of over 70,000 kilometers per hour, and amateur astronomers can see it with their telescopes as they fly through it.
Experts expect it to return to Earth after January’s flight in 2105. However, according to NASA analysis, humans do not have to worry about a space object threatening our planet for at least another 100 years.
