OTTAWA — An association that represents Canadian defense companies is concerned that Canada is not included in a security agreement between Australia, Britain and the United States.
According to the president of the Canadian Association of Defense and Security Industries, Christyn Cianfarani, Canada’s absence from this new pact could mean that the country will not have access to the same technologies as its close allies.
She also believes that the agreement could harm Canadian defense companies, since their competitors in the countries concerned by the pact could be advantaged.
The Canadian Press revealed this week that the Canadian Armed Forces have similar fears in relation to the deal, known by the acronym AUKUS.
The federal government has not explained why Canada was not part of this treaty. Rather, he recalled that defense agreements already exist with Australia, Great Britain and the United States.
Ms. Cianfarani stresses, however, that she would feel more comfortable if these other pacts really dealt with the same issues as AUKUS.
