An assault inside the New York subway is investigated as a hate crime against the gay community | Univision 41 New York WXTV

The New York police circulated a video showing a man pulling out the hair of a passenger and hitting him in the face and head.

According to the authorities, the assailant spat on the victim twice and said “I’m sick of all of you”referring to the gay community.

Now they are investigating the case as a hate crime, and are asking the community for help to identify the subject.

It happened aboard the A train in Upper Manhattan, near the 190th Street station.

The assailant also stated: “I wish I had my pepper spray”“I have to start taking it with me,” police said.

The 22-year-old victim had to be taken to a local hospital for hair loss and head lacerations.

According to experts, these acts are very frequent

We contacted clinical therapist and university professor Karina Rieke to find out her assessment of these types of incidents, the frequency with which they occur and the impact they leave on victims.

“These types of events are very common in New York City. We therapists see many cases. A large number of them remain in the silence of the therapist, because there is a lot of fear, complexes and retaliation”says the teacher.

And adds that “It is important that they report it to the police, because by doing so the victim is psychologically empowered through justice. They must understand that there is protection and that there is a whole community that will support them, that they are not alone.”

Dr. Rieke also advises victims at the time of the assault to ask someone to record what is happening. She then goes on to explain to us the sequels that remain.

“Severe depression. Sadness. You can have nightmares, you will not want to get on the train. You are going to distrust people, you are going to be constantly afraid”points out.

And he concludes that the most important thing is to seek therapeutic help.

The year 2021 was critical for violence and deaths in acts of this nature

In the specific case of transgender or gender nonbinary people, violence and deaths reached a critical point in the United States in 2021.

Human Rights Campaign reported that this was the deadliest year on record so far for that group of people.

The New York authorities ask that, if you know the subject who executes the aggression in the video, call the crime stop line at the number 1-888-57-TRACK (74782).
