According to the essay The 28-year-old woman tried to kick her husband out of the house, because he smoked too much. In response, the man her punched in the eye.
„Mom pulled a gun from under the bed. I was in the living room and my sisters and brother were in the room with them. Mom pointed the gun at Dad and fired three times. The bullets hit the wall. Mom told dad to sleep in the car in the driveway and not come back or I’ll shoot him again”.
The school psychologist who read the retelling reported possible child abuse to the police. Law enforcement officials searched the girl’s house and found several bullet holes in the walls of the living room, bedroom and hallway. Two pistols were also found and seized.
The woman admitted that she shot her husband at least twice. However, according to her, she did it in response to his violence. The woman’s face showed signs of a beating: cut and bruise around right eye.
Three of the four children of the spouses were in the same room during their quarrel. Johnson’s husband was not injured.
The woman was arrested and charged with four counts of reckless conduct. Custody of two of Johnson’s children was given to their grandmother and the other two to their aunt.
The woman has been released on bail from custody pending trial. The first court hearing in her case is scheduled for February 23.
