On Sunday, July 18, Latvian Television will broadcast a special concert of the newly formed Maris Jansons Festival Orchestra of the music festival “Riga Jurmala” from the Dzintari Concert Hall, conducted by the world-famous British conductor John Eliot Gardiner.
The Maris Jansons Festival Orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms’ First Symphony in Dominator, op.68, and Robert Schuman’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in Laminor, op.54, performed by the outstanding Hungarian pianist András Šifs.
The orchestra was formed as an initiative initiated by the musicians themselves just a few weeks before this performance. Musicians from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Zurich Tonhalle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra have accepted the invitation to the festival in honor of the famous Latvian conductor Marisa Janson. With the support of Marisa Janson’s wife Irina Jansone, the orchestra has been renamed the Marisa Janson Festival Orchestra.
The television broadcast of the concert will be produced by the editorial board of LTV Kultūras broadcasts, it will be directed by journalist Eva Johansone, directed by Agita Cāne-Ķīle
Ieva Rozentāle, the head of the LTV Culture program, emphasizes: “The performances of world-class classical music stars – Sir John Eliot Gardiner and András Šifs – as well as the most outstanding European orchestra musicians are a special event for Latvia. The opportunity to watch them on television is exclusive. Gardiner’s legendary recordings of baroque and classical music have become top-level conductors around the world, but young people admire Schiff’s interpretations of piano music and study at music schools. For the first time, Latvian Television will record and broadcast these artists. An unforgettable event is coming! ”
The concert will open the second music festival “Riga Jurmala” – a newcomer among European summer festivals, which has already become important in Latvian music life. In collaboration with the festival and the award-winning TV producer and director Pēteris Maniurs, a documentary film “Mariss Jansons: The Story of Four Orchestras” dedicated to conductor Mariss Jansons is being made, it is also co-produced by Latvian Television. The premiere is planned for the beginning of 2022.
