Tottenham manager José Mourinho reacted with bitter irony to the news that coronavirus tests in the Irish national team had revealed a positive finding on Spurs defender Matt Doherty. The 28-year-old right-back will skip Saturday’s English League match with Manchester City due to a mandatory 10-day quarantine and a European League duel with Razgrad next Thursday.
The Portuguese coach on the instagram criticized the national team events at this time. “An amazing football week. Great emotions in national team matches, excellent friendly matches and complete safety during them. The results of the covid tests come after the matches take place. Randomly selected players run around the field, there are joint team meetings and so on.” Mourinho wrote sarcastically.
Due to national team duties, the Portuguese coach now has only six players in training.
Doherty, as well as his Irish teammate James McClean, showed coronavirus tests after Sunday’s League of Wales match (0: 1). Both will be missing in Wednesday’s match against Bulgaria, in which the Irish will defend their participation in the B league.
