An Algerian who won a € 250,000 lottery in Belgium cannot take the money because he has no documents. He is trying to prove his identity in order to make a profit.
The 28-year-old man bought a five-euro ticket at a supermarket a few weeks ago, but was unable to make a profit.
Alexander Verstrate, an Algerian lawyer, told AFP that his client was working to prove his identity to Belgian authorities.
“My client is in an illegal situation, he has no documents and no bank account. We are looking for documents to prove his identity, he will have to contact his family in Algeria, “said the lawyer.
The Bruges prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation to find the lucky winner.
The lawyer says that the man does not intend to apply for asylum in Belgium and that he has received a guarantee that he will not be deported until he receives the money won from the lottery.
