The Dakar is all about breathtaking landscapes but also dangerous, sometimes fatal, falls. For the 2021 edition of the race, motorcycle competitors are required to wear an airbag vest. A major and essential step forward to strengthen their security.
“It’s a real comfort to know that we will be in complete safety with the vest. We were already very safe before but it really adds a plus to limit all the damage to the spine where we are very requested as a biker “, confides Frédéric Barlerin, biker from Burgundy who is on his third Dakar.

Dakar 2021: an airbag vest made in Côte-d’Or enhances the safety of bikers

The waistcoat is made in Côte-d’Or, in Fontaine-lès-Dijon. The Helite company has made it its specialty. In the event of a fall, an electronic system allows the air bag to be released. “We have two small gas cartridges which are located at the rear left and the rear right. The card which analyzes the pilot’s movement receives the fall signal and will immediately ask the cartridges to deploy”, specifies Sylvain France, project manager at Helite. The swelling takes place very quickly, in 50 milliseconds.
The Fontaine-lès-Dijon company has around thirty employees. It also manufactures airbags in the field of aeronautics, horse riding, cycling and now rally. Since the creation of the Dakar, twenty bikers have died. Tragedies that the organizers do not hope to relive with these new vests.
